Next week we will will start learning about fraction equivalence using various models. It is very important that all 3rd grade student work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year, having these facts mastered is critical for the work they will do in 4th grade. Using flash cards or multiplication games at home are a great way to work on these! Advanced: This week we focused on factors and multiples. We did not get to prime and composite numbers and will work on that next week. We will work on number and shape patterns next week and tentatively will take a quiz on all these skills on Friday February 24th, and if not will get pushed to the following Monday. Accelerated: This week we focused on angles! We started creating angles with protractors and learned about adjacent angles. We will do a bit more with this next week and transition to triangle and quadrilateral attributes. Social Studies: This week we started writing our speeches and creating our European Explorer posters. We will finish up our posters next week. Thank you to the families who sent in posters for your child and other children so we would have one for every third grader! What a great community we have at NPE. You are going to love our Wax Museum if you are able to make it, and if you are not, posters will come home and your child will be able to show off all their learning to everyone at home! Important Dates:
We have our 3rd grade explorer project coming up and each student will need a large white FOAM poster to create their "face in a hole" explorer. Here is a link to some on Amazon if you are able to donate some extra for other children in your child's classroom. We would love to have these by Wednesday February 15th and you can also pick one up from Walmart to send in. 2.13 Please return field trip forms if you have not already done so! Thank you to so many for returning before today. 2.10 NPE Night at Alpharetta High School Girls Soccer Game 5:55PM. Reading This week we took our Unit 4 reading test. Next week we will start Unit 5 with nonfiction. We will be reading biographies, focusing on text features such as timelines and considering how these famous people in history impacted the outcome of our country. Writing This week we will be starting another informational writing, continuing to practice the skills from last unit and most importantly learn how to time manage writing (typing) essays in a limited time. We will start the unit looking at different informational prompts and analyzing what we are being asked to write. We will look at an exemplar informational writing and begin to plan our next piece. Phonics This week we worked on Unpredictable Vowel Teams, multisyllable words. Next week we will continue this work as our phonics was cut short this week with Brain Building and STEAM. Math On Level: This week we introduced different fraction models and next week we will focus on fractions on a number line with a check in at the end of the week. Looking at fractions on a number line is a huge emphasis for our third grade fractions unit. It is very important that all 3rd grade student work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year, having these facts mastered is critical for the work they will do in 4th grade. Using flash cards or multiplication games at home are a great way to work on these! Advanced: This week we started Grade 4 Unit 1 with multiplication comparison equations and representing the unknown with a variable. Students did an awesome job with this and next week we will transition to factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers. Accelerated: This week we started Grade 4 Unit 6. We focused first on points, rays, lines, line segments, and angles. Next week we will focus on classifying angles measuring angles with protractors. We plan to take a quiz on Wednesday. Social Studies: This week we finished learning about our 6 explorers! Next week we will start our Explorer projects where students will write a speech in the perspective of an explorer that they choose. Then they will create a "face in hole" poster so that they can become like a statue in a museum that comes to life. We plan to share these with you on Friday February 25th. The exact time of our presentation will be sent next week. Reading This week we read several poems, including haikus! Our daily phonics lessons come in handy for this as we counted the syllables and noticed the patterns of haiku poetry. We thought about the figurative language within poetry and what messages or lessons the author of the poem was trying to teach us. We started our animal research projects and most classes will continue this next week as we finish out our unit. Study guides came home this week and our Unit 4 test will be on Thursday February 9th. Writing This week we finished up our informational essays about how animals special abilities can help humans. This will be a minor grade. Next week on Monday students will have an hour and half to write a second informational essay, and "on demand" writing piece. This will be counted as a major assessment grade. Phonics This week we worked on Unpredictable Vowel Teams, Single Syllable words. These are vowel teams that can be pronounced two different ways. Next week we will work on Unpredictable Vowel Teams, multisyllable words. Math On Level: This week students finished up our geometry unit! Next unit will be learning about fractions! Students will first learn that fractions are a way for us to represent parts of a whole. Our end of unit goal is that students will be able to compare fractions with like denominators and generate equivalent fractions using models. It is very important that all 3rd grade student work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year, having these facts mastered is critical for the work they will do in 4th grade. Using flash cards or multiplication games at home are a great way to work on these! Advanced: This week we took our grade 4 unit 1 test! Next week we will start grade 4 unit 2! This unit focuses on multiplication and division. By the end of this unit students will learn to multiply and divide numbers greater than facts 0-12. We will start the unit learning about multiplicative comparison word problems. In third grade math, multiplication problems were only "equal groups" problems. For example: "Sandy had 4 baskets with 6 apples in each basket, how many apples does Sandy have?" Where 4th grade students are exposed to multiplicative comparison problems as well. For example: "Sandy has 6 apples. George has 4 times as many apples as Sandy. How many apples does George have?" Accelerated: This week we finished our fractions and decimal unit with our unit 5 assessment. Unit 6 will be geometry! We will start the unit learning a deeper upstanding of types of lines and angles. In 4th grade geometry we will review quadrilateral attributes and learn about lines of symmetry and patterns. Social Studies: This week we started to learn about individual explorers and got through about three of them. The Explorers we will study are: Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Vasco Nunez Balboa, Jacques Cartier, Hernando De Sotto, and Henry Hudson. We will continue this next week. When we learn about each explorer our goal is to understand what they wanted on their expedition, what ways they cooperated or caused conflict with the native people, and what were the positive or negative effects of their exploration. Student Success Skills This week we talked about how important perspective is. Next week we will learn how to be a buddy, not a bully.
