Important Dates: LAST CALL FOR 2022-2023 HOUSE SHIRT ORDERS! Please place any house shirt orders for this school year by end of the school day on Wednesday, October 5th. https://newprospetpta.membershiptoolkit.com/houseshirts202 -10.3 Wear royal blue for National Anti-Bullying Day -10.3-10.7 College Week -10.6 Reading and Math Retake -10.10 Columbus Day- NO SCHOOL -10.11-10.12 Teacher Professional Development Days- NO SCHOOL -10.14 PTA family movie night Reading This week we learned about different text structures and how to identify them in nonfiction text. We learned about description, sequence, compare and contrast, and cause and effect. This song linked bellow is a crowd favorite and helps us to remember the different ways authors teach us! Flocabulary Text Structure Next week we will have a practice grade on these text structures. We will then read some realistic fiction and historical fiction and work on summarizing the text and answering and asking questions about the text. These are standards that we have hit on in Unit 1, and will continue to master throughout the year. On Friday, we will have a minor grade reviewing all of our nonfiction skills we have been working on. Questions to ask while your child reads at home: Unit 1 -"What does the character SAY? What does the character DO? How does the character FEEL?" -"What does all this tell us about their traits?". -Can you summarize your story using "somebody, wanted, but, so, then? -What do you think is the main idea/central idea (main thing the author wants us to learn from reading this text) -What details support that? Unit 2 -What do you think the author's opinion about this topic is? -What text structure does the author use to teach us this information? -Is the author comparing anything in the text? -Is the author describing something? What is the central idea? -Does the author teach us information in sequence, or in order? -Does the author describe a why something has happened? Writing This week we looked at an example text, Sailing to America (realistic fiction), to see what that author did that we can also do in our stories. We looked how the author describes the setting, uses transitional phrases, and has a conclusion that resolves plot issues. Next week we will focus on grammar lessons (nouns) in our writing mini lessons and work to "publish" our final draft of the realistic fiction stories. We can't wait for you to read what they have come up with!! Phonics Next week we will work on closed, complex multisyllable patterns. Math On Level: This week we learned 3 multiplication strategies: equal groups, arrays, and number line. Next week we will learn the area model for multiplication and have a minor grade on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday we will learn about the commutative property of multiplication ( if 5x3=3x5). Unit 2 notes: The language we often use when teaching multiplication is "equal groups of", for example 3 x 2 = 6 is: 3 "equal groups of" 2=6. For division, we use "split into equal groups of", for example 6 "split into 2 equal groups" =3. You can preview these strategies in the unit resources. Advanced: This week we focused on fractions of a set and fractions on a number line. We will have a minor grade on fractions on a number line on Monday. Then, we will work on comparing fractions and identifying equivalent fractions. Science: This week we finished our habitats and an adaptations unit! Next week we will move on to Social Studies and start our Government Unit. In this unit, students will learn about laws vs. rules, voting, the 3 branches of government, and the difference between federal, state, and local governments. Some of the nonfiction reading we have been doing in RELA connects well to these standards so students will be able to make connections across their learning. Student Success Skills This week we learned about how to focus best and set goals to improve our focus at school. Next week we will talk about speaking up to meet our needs!

Important Dates:
-9.30 Habitats and Adaptations Major Grade -9.30 "House Day" wear house colors/ house t-shirt -9.27 Andy's Spirit Night 10.3-10.7 College Week 10.10 Columbus Day- NO SCHOOL 10.11-10.12 Teacher Professional Development Days- NO SCHOOL 10.14 PTA family movie night Reading This week we continued our nonfiction reading skills focusing on identifying author's opinion. The texts we read taught us about voting and democracy, which will be an amazing opener to our Government unit in social studies in a few weeks. Next week our huge focus will be identifying text structure. The four major structures we will focus on are compare and contrast, sequence, description, and cause and effect. Writing We started off our week learning about elements of a realistic fiction story. We had too much fun thinking of non realistic things that could happen in a story and compared those to types of things that WOULD happen in a realistic fiction story. Student are writing a story about a time when a student comes to school and their teacher is not there. We began to plan out our first story thinking about characters, setting, beginning, middle and end. We looked at example realistic fiction texts to identify what makes a strong beginning in a story. We will continue this work next week as our stories develop! Phonics Next week we will work on closed, simple multisyllable patterns Math On Level: This week we finished our first third grade math unit! We will start Unit 2 next week which will be all about multiplication and division. This unit will not be about simply memorizing facts. We will take time to learn strategies to multiply and divide that help the kids understand what they are doing when they are multiplying and dividing. The strategies we teach them will help them visualize it in multiple ways before they become fluent in this skill. The language we often use when teaching multiplication is "equal groups of", for example 3 x 2 = 6 is: 3 "equal groups of" 2=6. For division, we use "split into equal groups of", for example 6 "split into 2 equal groups" =3. You can preview these strategies in the unit resources. Next week will start with multiplication strategies. Advanced: This week we dove into our fraction units. Our focus this week was understanding that the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. For example, I would much rather have 1/2 of a dark chocolate bar than 1/8 of the dark chocolate bar :) Next week we will look beyond fractions just as equal parts in shapes but also fractions of a set and fractions on a number line. Science: This week we wrapped up learning about adaptations that animals and plants have in each of Georgia's habitats (mountain habitats, piedmont habitat, coastal/ocean habitat, and swamp and marsh). Next week we will have several grading assignments about this learning and will end with our major assessment on Friday. The Georgia Regions packet that came home in Thursday folders is a great resource to review for our major assessment as well as the adaptation vocabulary attached in our unit resources. Student Success Skills We found learning about our brains and how our brains learn best this week very interesting! Hopefully our "brain hats" that we created make it home in one piece for you to see and enjoy as much as we did. Next week we will learn all about focus and how to help ourselves improve focus! Important Dates:
-9.16 Book Fair Kickoff -9.17 5th Grade Free Car Wash, 11:00-3:00 PM, donations welcome! -9.19-9.23 Book Fair - 9.21 Fall Picture Day -9.23 On Level Math Unit 1 Test -9.30 Habitats and Adaptations Major Grade Reading We have finished Unit 1 with our unit test today! Next week we will begin unit 2. We will. Unit 2 will start with reading nonfiction and working on nonfiction skills. One skill we will work on is identifying author's opinion vs our opinion. We will also work towards being able to identifying text structure: compare and contrast, sequence, description, and cause and effect. Writing This week we finished up our opinion writing about what Georgia Region we would like best to live in. Next week we we write realistic fiction stories! This unit we will write two pieces. The first will be a creative piece. The second piece will be written based off a text that we read in class - still creative but learning to use details from another text to create our own stories. Phonics Next week we will work on vowel-r patterns Math On Level: This week we finished up learning our subtraction strategies and practiced regrouping across zeros. Next week we will learn about creating bar and picture graphs and review for our test on Friday. Study guides will come home Monday and will be the homework for the week. Advanced: This week we finished up Unit 4 with our test and project! Next week we will begin Unit 5 which is fractions. Unit 4 introduces fractions with partitioning shapes but we will move towards comparing and ordering fractions in 3rd grade. Science: This week started to learn about adaptions of plants and animals in the GA regions. We will continue this work next week as we did not get to everything we needed to learn with brain building and our pep rally this week! Student Success Skills This week we talked random acts of kindness and set goals to show kindness in our schools and home! Next week we will learn what helps our brains learn information best. Important Update -Thank you for supporting your children as they learn the new responsibility of filling out an agenda each week! -Be on the look out from your homeroom teacher for a sign up genius for fall conferences in the coming weeks. Important Dates: -9.16 Book Fair Kickoff -9.19-9.23 Book Fair - 9.21 Fall Picture Day -9.16 Reading Unit 1 Test -9.16 Advanced Math Unit 4 Geometry Test -9.23 On Level Math Unit 1 Test Reading This week we continued finding the main (or central) idea of a nonfiction text and finding supporting details. We ended the week with a quick check in identifying main/central idea and details in a text. Next week we will review all of our fiction and non fiction skills and end the week with our first unit assessment. Expect a study guide to come home Monday, this can be done in place of nightly reading as part of their "homework". As your child is working through this, practice with them the importance of going back to the text to find answers and reading questions carefully. Questions to ask while your child reads at home: -"What does the character SAY? What does the character DO? How does the character FEEL?" -"What does all this tell us about their traits?". -Can you summarize your story using "somebody, wanted, but, so, then? -What do you think is the main idea/central idea (main thing the author wants us to learn from reading this text) -What details support that? Writing This week we have begun opinion writing! We have started by choosing our opinion (which GA region/habitat would be best to live in) and generating reasons why using details we have learned about these habitats in science. We will continue with this writing next week and students will turn it in for a major grade on Friday. Phonics Next week we will work on long vowel silent e patterns. Math On Level: This week we started learning our subtraction with regrouping strategies! There is a video under Unit Resources-On Level Math that demonstrates these strategies for parents that would like to understand these strategies better. Once students have learned all strategies they can use whichever works best for them! We will have a check in next week on subtraction. This week students finished up an addition and rounding project that will count towards a major grade. Advanced: This week we reviewed picture and bar graphs. We created graphs and practiced answering questions about graphs. Students started an "Area/Perimeter Town" project that will count as a major assessment. Our unit test will be on September 16th and you can expect a study guide to come home on Monday as the homework for that full week. Science: This week we finished up learning about the mountain, piedmont, and costal plain habitats. Next week we will focus on the adaptations that both plants and animals have to survive in these regions. A huge focus will be understanding the different types of adaptations. These vocabulary words are linked in the blog under Science resources. We will have several practice and minor assessments next week. Student Success Skills This week we talked about what it means to be "a BUD". Next week we will talk about acts of kindness. We hope you have a restful and joyful labor day weekend! We look forward to seeing our Panther's back at school on Wednesday 9.7. Remote Day work came home in Thursday folders to complete on 9.6.
