Families will have digital access to the For Families report after logging in to their student’s i-Ready dashboard and entering our district report code: 1HX9DP on the top right-hand corner of the For Families tab. This code is applicable to all students throughout the district and is offered to families so they can access student results before deciding whether or not to share them directly with their children. For additional information about how to access and interpret results, please see attachment above. Please note that we will go over these results with your family at upcoming conferences. READING This week students worked on their text features project! They have enjoyed researching an animal and displaying their learning through text features on a poster or booklet. Next week we will focus back to reading fiction and thinking about how characters actions contribute to the sequence of events of stories. When reading at home, questions you can discuss as a family: Fiction Questions: -What kind of person is the character in your book? -Describe the character in your story with traits. -What does the character say or do that gives you a clue to what kind of person they are? -What problem does the character seem to be facing? -Summarize your story using "somebody...wanted...but..so...then" strategy you learned d in school. -What actions has your character done throughout the story? Did their actions cause any changes in the story? Nonfiction Questions: -What is the central or main idea of the text? (what does the author want you to know?) -What are some facts or details that support the central idea? -What text features do you see in the text? What have you learned from them? PHONICS This week worked on closed, complex multi syllable words. Next week we will do closed, schwa multi syllable words. GRAMMAR This week we focused on pronouns. Next week we will work on identifying and writing sentences with subject-verb agreement. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week students created one animal and one plant within a habitat of GA. They worked on finishing our hallway displays to show off our learning of adaptations these plants and animals have to thrive in their environment. WRITING This week students began writing their realistic fiction stories and we are having SO much fun. Students are getting creative and using amazing narrative writing techniques. We can't wait to share our stories with you! MATH Enhanced (on level)-This week we learned about factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers. This skill used to be taught in fourth grade but is now part of our third grade curriculum. We will finish up our multiplication unit and take our assessment next Thursday. Now that we have the foundation of multiplication, it will be an important goal for student to be fluent with their multiplication facts by the end of the school year. They can practice this at home with multiplication card games, online games, songs, or flash cards. Accelerated- This week we focused on factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers ( a skill now taught in third grade with the new standards but this group did not get last year so we will be spending time on that). Next week students will work on a project that they will use to show off their knowledge about factors, multiples, prime, and composite. It will be taken as a major grade. STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) This week we talked about a sense of belonging with our friendships. Next week we will talk about support systems and how to "be a bud".

GRAMMAR This week we focused on abstract nouns, next week we will work on pronouns and anticedents. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week we thought about adaptations that animals and plants have in each habitat. Next week we will be starting a project where students will get to focus on one plant and animal in a GA habitat and work together to design classroom displays of each habitat in the hallway! WRITING This week we talked about the difference between realistic/ not realistic and looked at exemplar writing to inspire us. We started to plan our realistic fiction stories that we will be writing next week. MATH Enhanced (on level)-This week we started to learn about properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, and eventually distributive). Next wee we will learn about factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers. This skill used to be taught in fourth grade but is now part of our third grade curriculum. We will take a multiplication check in next week (minor grade). Accelerated- This week we worked on numerical patterns. A lot of these pattern skills are a review from third grade. Next week we will be focusing on factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers ( a skill now taught in third grade with the new standards but this group did not get last year so we will be spending time on that). STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) This wee we talked about a sense of belonging with our friendships. We will continue this work next week. 9.15 Book Fair Kickoff family event (can shop + eat pizza!)

PHONICS This week worked on more vowel r, focusing on ar, or, w+ar, w +or. We took our first phonics assessment. Next week the focus will be closed, multisyllable words. GRAMMAR This week we focused on irregular plural nouns, next week we will look for and use abstract nouns. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week we continued learning about each GA region. Next week our focus will be the different habitats within the region (mountain, piedmont, plains, coast, ocean, swamp) and animals and plants that adapt to thrive in those habitats. WRITING This week we published our first stories! Some students have even typed their story. Next week students will take a pre-assessment on informational writing (used only for us to plan out instruction) and then start a new fiction story. This time instead of writing a personal narrative students will get to write a realistic fiction story. MATH Enhanced (on level)-This week we continued multiplication strategies, multiplication patterns, and connect multiplication to real world examples! We will continue this next week and talk about some properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, and eventually distributive). Accelerated- This week we took our Unit 1 test, all about place value, addition, subtraction, and rounding. Next up we start Unit 2 which will be all about patterns (both numerical and shapes). STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) Next week we will talk about a sense of belonging with our friendships. Important Dates:

Our goal as nonfiction readers is to identify the central (or main) idea of a text, and find supporting details. We also want to utilize our text features as we read to gain more informational bout the topic. Next week we will continue these nonfiction skills. Our unit 1 test will be completed on Thursday next week. As your child reads at home, some questions you can ask them about their books are listed bellow. These conversations are a simple way to practice what we are doing in school within your daily conversations. Fiction Questions: -What kind of person is the character in your book? -Describe the character in your story with traits. -What does the character say or do that gives you a clue to what kind of person they are? -What problem does the character seem to be facing? -Summarize your story using "somebody...wanted...but..so...then" strategy you learned d in school. Nonfiction Questions: -What is the central or main idea of the text? (what does the author want you to know?) -What are some facts or details that support the central idea? -What text features do you see in the text? What have you learned from them? PHONICS This week we paused on phonics being such a short week. We will pick back up next with more vowel r, focusing on ar, or, w+ar, w +or. We will take our first unit assessment for phonics on Friday! GRAMMAR This week we paused on grammar due to the short week and will focus on irregular plural nouns next week. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week we introduced the Appalachian Plateau region and started to look at animals and plants that live in this region! Next week will continue with the other regions. We will have a GA regions practice grade this week! WRITING Next week our goal will be to publish our personal narratives. Students will have an opportunity to type their story or hand write it, and will not be expected to finish typing this one since it is our first time. Throughout the year as we become more experienced with typing it will become more of an expectation. We can't wait to share our completed stories with you! They are jam packed with amazing description and details. MATH Enhanced (on level)-This week we focused on knowing a variety of ways to model multiplication. Students can model multiplication using equal groups, repeated addition, arrays, and a bar model! Next week we will use the number line strategy. We will take a check in on these ways to represent multiplication on Tuesday. We will then dive deeper into other multiplication patterns that we notice. Accelerated- This week we wrapped up addition and subtraction and reviewed answering questions about graphs. We will continue this next week and review up until our unit test which is scheduled for Thursday. STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) Next week we will talk about reflective learning strategies!
Important Dates: 9.4 No School: Labor Day 9.5 & 9.6 No School: Teacher Work Days 9.7 2-5th grade Curriculum Night 9.15 Book Fair Kickoff family event (can shop + eat pizza!) 9.18 3rd grade previewing and making wish lists at book fair 9.19-9.22 Book Fair Open at school 9.21 Picture Day 9.29 PTA Movie Night family event READING This week in reading we took some check-ins on Yoon and the Jade Bracelet, assessing our fiction reading skills that we have been working on. We ended the week reading some nonfiction, paying attention to text features and identifying the central idea of text. We will continue our nonfiction learning next week. PHONICS This week in phonics we reviewed vowel -r,: er, ir, and ur. We also leanred the difference between base words and roots. Base words have meaning and can stand alone with out affixes. Root words are word parts that have meaning but can NOT stand alone with out affixes. A lot of our phonics work over the year will center around roots and their meanings so students are able to define unknown words in their reading. GRAMMAR This week we focused on plural nouns, next week we will continue plural nouns with a focus on irregular plural nouns. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week we started our first science unit of the year which is all about animal and plant adaptations within the GA regions/habitats. We spent this week reviewing what students learned in second grade about the different GA regions. WRITING This week students worked hard on drafting their beginning, middle, and end of their personal narratives. We will continue this work next week as we start to complete our detailed stories! MATH Enhanced (on level)-This week we started our multiplication unit! We used arrays to visualize multiplication (ex: 3x5 is three rows of five) and connected those arrays to real life arrays, like cookies on a baking sheet. We noticed patterns with x2 and x10 and will continue learning strategies and noticing patterns that will help us be confident about multiplication. Accelerated- This week we focused on multi digit subtraction with regrouping, multiple regrouping, and subtracting across zeros. We use the language of "regrouping" instead of the traditional "borrowing" because when you "borrow" something, you give it back, and that's that what you do when you need to regroup to subtract. We did not fit in our minor grade this afternoon, so when we return from break students will take a quiz on addition and subtraction. We got started on our Reflex math for fact fluency and students are loving it! I will send log in information home next week so students can utilize this amazing program at home. STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) This week we learned about strategies for improving focus. Next week we will continue to finish the SSS inventory if students have not yet. The Student Success Skills Inventory is used to measure student growth across Student Success Skill standards as a result of Rethink Ed lessons. Students will complete the 15-20 item inventory between August 28, 2023 – September15, 2023. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. The inventory is pushed out to students using the Illuminate platform. Parents can choose to opt their student out of the inventory. To opt out, parents must submit a written request to opt out to the school principal. |
