I-ready Diagnostic Our grade level will be taking the iReady Mid-Year diagnostic assessment when we return from break. We will take the Diagnostic on the dates listed above. This assessment is not used for a grade, but is used for instructional purposes both within the classroom by us as teachers and to help aide in placement decisions. These diagnostic assessments help provide us with valuable information so that we can target instruction in both reading and math! Reading This week we continued to read folktales from various cultures! We practiced summarizing fiction text, identifying personification, and recognizing the theme or lesson of the stories. When we return from break we will focus on our i-ready diagnostic and jump back into reading some nonfiction. We will have a check in (minor grade) on Friday December 2nd. Flocabulary Text Structure Questions to ask while your child reads at home: Unit 1 -"What does the character SAY? What does the character DO? How does the character FEEL?" -"What does all this tell us about their traits?". -Can you summarize your story using "somebody, wanted, but, so, then? -What do you think is the main idea/central idea (main thing the author wants us to learn from reading this text) -What details support that? Unit 2 -What do you think the author's opinion about this topic is? -What text structure does the author use to teach us this information? -Is the author comparing anything in the text? -Is the author describing something? What is the central idea? -Does the author teach us information in sequence, or in order? -Does the author describe a why something has happened? -How did the characters actions contribute to the events that happen in the story? -What do you think the lesson is of this story? Unit 3 - What are some text features in this scientific text? -How does that text feature contribute to what you have learned so far in the text? -What is the central idea and details that support it? -What are some ways the author uses personification in this story? -What lesson do the characters in this story learn? How do they feel? Writing This week we continued our opinion essay on whether we think robots or people should explore space. Students worked hard to organize their reasons and evidence that supports their reasons, citing from our 3 sources! Ask your student what their opinion is and to share some of their reasons they have written so far. When we return from break we will begin to "publish" our essays. Phonics Next week we will work on Open, Single Syllable words. Math On Level: This week we worked on patterns in numbers (both identifying and creating patterns). When we return from break we will introduce solving for area. Students will begin by connecting finding area to the arrays we use to solve multiplication problems, using square tiles to find the square units of the shape. Next, we will learn to calculate the area by multiplying the length and width. Finally, we will learn to calculate the area of a large rectangle using the distributive property. We will take a quiz on area on Friday December 2nd. Now that we have finished up unit 2, students should work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year. Advanced: We started off our unit reviewing telling time and also worked on solving elapsed time word problems. We will review this when we return from break and plan to take an elapsed time quiz on Wednesday November 30th. After we have mastered time, we will start estimating and answering questions involving mass and volume ( g/kg and L/mL). Science This week we worked on our rocks and minerals project to display all of our knowledge. When we return from break we will start our American Indians (pre European Exploration) unit. This unit differs from what students learned in second grade (where students learned about tribe nations native to Georgia) because we look at all tribe nations across 6 different regions across North America and will identify how their climate and resources effected their shelters, clothing, and food. Student Success Skills This week we talked about strategies to calm down when we are feeling stressed. When we return from break we will learn about goal setting to achieve our personal goals!

11.17 Thanksgiving Feast during lunch times (Kindergarten, 2nd & 3rd, other grades will be held on the 15th) 11.17 Kendra Scott Spirit Night 11.21-11.25 Thanksgiving break- no school Reading This week we started to read some legends (folktales). We talked about how legends were how people groups once explained the world long ago and they passed down these stories across generations. We noticed how authors use personification within the text as well as practicing our other reading skills we have learned this year in fiction reading. We finished the week with a check in and will continue fiction work next week. Flocabulary Text Structure Questions to ask while your child reads at home: Unit 1 -"What does the character SAY? Unit 3 - What are some text features in this scientific text? -How does that text feature contribute to what you have learned so far in the text? -What is the central idea and details that support it? -What are some ways the author uses personification in this story? Writing This week we continued our opinion unit! Students are working on an opinion essay on whether they think people or robots should explore space. We worked as a class to make a list of supporting reasons for either claim. Then students practiced finding evidence that will support their reasons within three different text. They have written all this information into an organizer/planning page. This is hard (and new) work and will take a lot of practice to get right, but we know they can do it! Next week we will transition them from taking their information in the organizer to paragraphs. Phonics Next week we will work on Closed and Long Vowel Silent-e syllables. Math On Level: We have begun Unit 3 which is all about multi step word problems, patterns in multiplication, and applying our multiplication learning to solving for area. This week our focus was multi-step word problems. Its important when students are practicing this at home they stop and pay attention to the question is asking them first, draw or write what we already know from the problem, and make a plan before jumping into an operation. We had planned for a check in for today, and we have bumped it to Monday. Next week we will work on patterns in multiplication. Now that we have finished up unit 2, students should work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year. Advanced: This week we finished up Unit 5 and will start Unit 6 ( time and measurement) next week. We will work on solving elapsed time problems next week! Science This week we practiced identifying attributes in rocks and students are having fun finding rocks outside at home and at school! Then we shifted focus a bit and learned about the three different soils: clay, loam, and sand. We learned that soil is made from eroded rock and investigated which of the soils is best for growing plants. We also learned what erosion is. Next week we will work on a project where students display their knowledge of rocks, minerals, soils, and erosion. Student Success Skills This week we learned how important it is to think before we say something within our relationships. Next week we will Important Dates: 11.4 Taste of NPE TONIGHT! 6:00-7:30 11.10 Advanced Math Unit 5 Test 11.4 Taste of New Prospect 6:00-7:30 11.8 Election Day- Remote Learning Day- assignments coming home on Monday. Reading This week we started Unit 3! This week we read nonfiction scientific texts. We enjoyed practicing our information reading compression skills while learning so much about space. We looked closely at text features and how important they are to helping us understand what we are learning while reading. As always, we work on finding the central ideas and details that support our central idea in the text. Next week will finish our scientific texts and then will shift to reading legends (folktales/myths) and practicing our fictional comprehension strategies. Unit 3 - What are some text features in this scientific text? -How does that text feature contribute to what you have learned so far in the text? -What is the central idea and details that support it? Writing This week we started an opinion writing unit! This unit will be different from our first opinion writing because students will receive a prompt and 3 different texts that they will gather evidence from to support their opinion and reasons. This is a big skill and can be hard to learn, so our focus of the week was looking at an exemplar opinion essay and study how the "exemplar student" used evidence from 3 different text within her essay. Seeing this example helped students understand what their goal as a writer will be. Next week we will start planning our essays about if we think humans or robots should explore space. We will study our 3 texts and decide what evidence we will use in our own essays to support our opinion. Phonics Next week we will work on Long Vowel Silent-e, Complex Multisyllable words. Math On Level: We finished Unit 2 this week and tests will come home on Thursday next week. We will start Unit 3 next week starting off with 2 step word problems. We will teach students a strategy for slowing down and making sure they understand what the question is asking them, and not just seeing numbers and guessing what operation they should try within the problem. Now that we have finished up unit 2, students should work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12. Advanced: This week we measured to the nearest quarter inch and graphed measurement data on line plot graphs. Next week we will review our test and take the test on November 10th. Students will start with a hard copy of the test, then enter their answers into the online platform as they are learning to take tests online while still using scratch paper to do their best work! Science We started our rocks and minerals unit this week and so far students are loving it! We learned how rocks are formed to build some background knowledge on rocks. We then looked at some rocks and learned the 4 attributes that can help us classify rocks are: color, luster (is it shiny or dull?), hardness (is it easily scratched or hard to scratch?), and texture(how does it feel?). We took a closer look at the Moh's hardness scale as well. Next week students will get to look at our large collection of rocks and minerals and we will transition to learning about soils. Student Success Skills This week we learned some calm down strategies and how we can apply them to real situations that we feel frustrated. Next week our lesson is "Stop before you say it!" and it will help us understand actions/consequences in our relationships with others. |
