They will complete a book report project on one of our read aloud novels from the year. They will show off their learning with a Bloom's Ball. This will be the major grade of this unit. We had a great time at spring showcase finishing out our HEAT unit with you! Now we will learn about the three branches of government at the national, state, and local level. READING, GRAMAMR, & PHONICS, & WRITING We spent our time reviewing test taking skills this week and now its time for studnets to show what they know (which is A LOT) on the GA milestones. We will pick back up with phonics once testing is complete. After Milestones students will take the Unit 6 reading test but it will count as a minor grade NOT a major grade. MATH Enhanced (on level)- This week we took our Unit 8 test, however, it will count as a minor grade, not a major as it is a short unit with only two standards assessed. We will spend the rest of the year reviewing test taking skills before milestones, and reveiwing skills that will be important leading into 4th grade next year. Accelerated- This week we took our test and will focus on test taking skills leading up to Milestones as well. At spring showcase we will be combining this learning with our STEM lab learning! Studnets designed "penguine homes" to insulate penguines whose habitats are getting too hot! We will put our penguine homes to the test by putting penguine shapes icecubes into the shelters and places those shelters under heat lamps. While you conduct this experiment with your child you will have a chance to preview their social studies book creator project or play math games with your child! You will ONLY visit your homeroom classroom and can plan for about 15-20 minutes spent there. After we make improvments on our opinion essay, we will transition to practicing writing narrative stories for Milestones as well. These practices will not be for a grade. READING Returning from spring break we will be reading plays! We will pay attention to parts of a play, and have some fun readers theater activities as we determine the lesson learned in each story in this new genre. PHONICS Returning from break we we will review: Closed and Silent-e, Complex Syllable GRAMMAR Returnign from break will show the intensity of a word with shades of meaning. Example: content, happy, joyful, elated, thrilled SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE We will begin our week learning about the solar eclipse! READING This week we took our Unit 5 test and started our final RELA unit, Unit 6! We will be reviewing various skills we've learned this year in preperation for milestones and fourth grade! We read nonfiction this week and asking the question "Why is setting goals important?" as we read about different astronaunts who worked hard to achieve their goals. PHONICS Next week we we work on vowel-r, complex multisyllable words. GRAMMAR Next week we will work on using commas correctly with quoation marks. SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE This week we worked on our digital books about Colonial America! We used book creator and students did a great job showing off their learning in this way. WRITING This week we finished writing our informational essays on desert animals and their adaptations. Next week we will begin focusing on Opinion writing skills, looking back at our Write Score Opinion Writing. Our goal will be to look at that writing (that was ungraded and on demand) and find ways to improve it and set writing goals! Math: Enhanced (on level)- This week we began our geometry unit by finding area of rectangular shapes. We connected it to mulitplication. When we looked at irregular shapes, we talked about how we can split the area into smaller parts . Accelerated- This week we focused on classfiying types of lines. GA Milestones Device Preparation - Secure Practice “Stress Test” next week: New Prospect 3rd – 5th Grade students will be participating in a districtwide “stress test” in preparation for the upcoming Georgia Milestones. This will occur next week on Wednesday, March 20th at 9:00AM. The purpose of the “stress test” is to check our student devices by simulating a testing environment to see the stress it puts on the DRC Insight Testing application and the FCS network. In addition, students will be able to preview the available tools accessible within the testing platform and practice procedures that will be used for prepping their devices, logging in, and navigating the questions within the platform. This is only a practice and not a graded or evaluative assessment in any way. READING We had a busy week this week with brain building, viewing the chorus concert, and our field trip! STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) Next week we will talk about conflict resolution and how to "calm the conflict" REPEAT: WELNESS REMINDER Students who have flu-like symptoms, and who are ill, have a fever of 100.4°F or greater, chronic diarrhea or vomiting and/or may have a contagious illness (potential or actual) MUST NOT be sent to school and will not be permitted to remain in school. The GA Department of Education has created study guides that you can use as a resource for home.
