After they read, great questions to ask them to support skills we are working on in class are: -"What are the characters in this book feeling?" - "What kind of person is the main character?" (describing with traits) -"Summarize what has happened in your book so far" Writing: This week in writing we continued working on our small moment stories while focusing on the lead. We completed a lead check in on Tuesday. We learned to be fast and furious writers in getting our thoughts onto paper. The students learned that revising doesn't mean just fixing your writing but developing the heart of the story. Next week we will work through the writing process and turn in our first final draft of the year. Reading: We began our first novel of the year, Stone Fox. The students were introduced to comprehension checks to use during independent reading. We also began to jot about our reading. We ended the week discussing fables and completing a graphic organizer to dive deeper with characters, problem, retelling of the fable, and understanding the moral/lesson. Next week we will focus on predicting and complete a summarizing check in on Friday. Math: On-Level: Students worked on rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds using a variety of strategies including number lines and math games. Next week we begin working on addition with regrouping. Each day we will focus on a different strategy. We will have a quiz on Sept. 9th. Advanced: This week we discussed 2-D shapes and their attributes and took a quadrilateral quiz. Students were also introduced to fractions of a region and area review. Next week we will continue with area and perimeter along with graphs. We will review on Thursday and on Friday we will take our Unit 4 assessment. Acc Math: This week in ACC math we finished up rounding and adding through all place values, using the standard algorithm. Next week we will focus on subtracting through all place values. We will take a quiz on adding and subtracting on Thursday September 4th. After labor day weekend we will begin to wrap up this unit and prepare for our unit test! Grammar: We worked on nouns. Each day we spent time discussing and using nouns in different activities and took a check in on Friday. Next we our focus is verbs. Phonics: This week we worked on digraphs. Next week we will move on to vowel teams. Science: This week we begin learning the regions of Georgia. Next week we will focus on plants and animals located in the five regions and begin work on our end of unit project.

Writing: This week we started our first writing unit: Small Moment Stories. We discussed strategies for coming up with ideas to write about, what to do when we run out if gas, and the difference between a news reporter's voice and a storyteller's voice. Next week we will continue working on our stories and spending time crafting our leads (introductions). Reading: The students completed the Iready Diagnostic this week. This helps teachers to target specific reading skills during small group instruction. Our mini-lessons focused on choosing just right books and setting goals for becoming better readers. We have also started administrating the BAS which allows the students to read to their teacher and gives a better picture of fluency and comprehension. Next week we will work on recommending book, checking for comprehension while reading, and following text clues while reading. Math: We finished the Iready Diagnostic and 1st unit pre-assessments this week. Students also began going to their math class. The students worked on math expectations and procedures and were introduced to station rotations and math games. Math Homework starts next week. Next week we will be learning: On-Level: Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 using a variety of strategies Advanced: Geometric Shapes Accelerated: Place Value to the Millions, this unit includes review of previous learned skills Foundational Skills: Nouns, This week we are beginning our weekly grammar skill. Phonics: Diagraphs, This week we are beginning our 1st phonic skill. Science: This week the students were introduced to adaptations of animals and plants in Georgia. Next week we will focus on the regions of Georgia and the plants and animals located there. This week in 3rd grade we focused on building classroom relationships and routines. We learned so much about our friends during our bag share time and what makes our hearts happy. The students have practiced routines in our classroom and school using our PAWS expectations. Lots of Dojo points have been given and we are well on our way to a successful 3rd grade year!
Important Updates
Next week we will begin the Iready diagnostic in both reading and math. This will be taken over 4 days depending on your child's homeroom teacher. The purpose of the diagnostic is to collect data to create targeted small groups, whole group instruction, and for individual conferences. Writing Next week we will start our first writing unit which will be writing personal narratives of true, small events. We will have minilessons and independent writing time each day. Writing conferences will also begin! Science We will start our first 3rd grade unit: GA regions and habitats! . This week we will get into specific GA regions and habitats. Looking forward we will start to make the connections between adaptions animals and plants in GA have for their specific GA habitats. Student Success Skills Each week will focus on one student success skill during morning meeting. We will start the year with emotions, focusing on how are you? We will spend time having discussions about our emotions and the appropriate way to show them. |
