Every 3rd grade student has math homework each night. It can be a paper assignment or assigned Iready lessons. Your child should have written it in their agenda. Please reach out to your child's math teacher with any questions regarding homework. It is New Prospect's policy for reading and math homework each night. Remember to have your child reading 15 minutes each night! After they read, great questions to ask them to support skills we are working on in class are: -What is the main idea? -What are some key details that support the main idea? -Can you tell me 3 facts about your book? Student Success Skill: Be ResilientStudents will learn strategies for managing emotions to build resilience. Writing: We are well under way with our informational books. We are using our research skills to add facts to our chapters. When we return from break we will have a check in on our best chapter we have so far. Reading: We are still working on identifying the main idea and key details of non-fiction books as well as using text features to support our reading. This week we began reading biographies and focused on Jackie Robinson in small groups. Math: Be sure to check out each math page for more details about current units. On-Level: This week we worked on our graphing standards and focused on bar graphs. We also were also introduced to area. When we return from break we will continue with area and have a check in on Friday. Advanced: We have officially finished all of the 3rd grade units this week. After break we are moving to our 1st 4th grade unit which is whole numbers, place value, and rounding. This unit is a long one and will continue until the middle of January. Acc Math: This week we worked on decomposing fractions and adding fractions with like denominators. When we return from break, we will explore addition with mixed numbers and take a quiz on Tuesday November 30th. We will then begin to multiply fractions. Social Studies: This week we began our European Explorers Unit. We learned about what an explorer does, the hardships they faced, and why they wanted to explore. After break we will be learning about specific explorers and their contributions during the Age of Exploration. This unit ends with a fun project that will require some supplies. (describing with traits) -"Summarize what has happened in your book so far" Student Success Skill: My Curious Mind Students will identify the importance of curiosity for growing. Writing: We are working hard on our informational writing unit. We learned that when writing an informational piece you must be an experts on the topic. We have a lot of experts about a variety of topics in 3rd grade! We have focused on creating our Table of Contents using strong subtopics. Next week we will work on elaborating each section of our books as well as balancing facts and ideas. Reading: We are still working on identifying the main idea and key details of non fiction texts. This is a BIG 3rd grade standard and can be difficult for some students especially as they transition to longer texts. Math: Be sure to check out each math page for more details about current units. On-Level: This week we began Unit 3: Patterns in Addition and Multiplication. We used 100 charts to look at the different patterns. Next week we are working on our graphing standards and will focus on bar graphs. Advanced: We have reviewed our graphing standards this week and worked in groups to create graphs. Our unit 6 assessment will be next Tuesday. Acc Math: Due to Friday's cancellation, we pushed our Unit 3 test to this past Thursday. They rocked their Unit 3 test, and we are moving on to Unit 4: Fraction Operations. Grammar/Phonics: This week it was all types of syllables. We learned about V/CV, VC/V, and VC/CV syllable patterns. We had a check in on Friday. Science: This week we ended our unit on Pollution. We visited each 3rd grade class and reviewed about the different types of pollution and completed fun activities to go along. We took our unit test on Friday. Next week we are beginning our next social studies unit: European Explorers. |
