The first book in an all-new, full-color, graphic novel spinoff series, The Last Comics on Earth, will be released this spring. To celebrate this release, Max will be doing a limited number of virtual school visits across the country. The book’s illustrator, Jay Cooper, will be joining the fun on select dates. Students can order signed copies of the book with the flyers that came home on Thursday! Reading This week we read informational text about Ellen Ochoa and took a check in. When we return from break, we will read plays and focus on features of plays. Writing This week we started to review our narrative writing skills in preparation for narrative writing on the Milestone test in May. We will continue this when we return for break and students will have a chance to put into practice what we have been learning in class with an On Demand. We will use this on demand to reflect and self score to set goals! This style of narrative writing is unique in that students will be writing a narrative story based off another text or story. This can be practiced at home if students re-write their own version of an already loved story, or create a fiction story with non-fiction details! Phonics When we return from break we will focus on closed and silent -e, complex syllables. We will end the week with a phonics assessment. The purpose of this assessment is for students to show what they know and for teachers to personalize phonics instruction as needed. Math On Level: Returning from break students will review telling time and begin to solve elapsed time problems. Students will be taught a "number line" strategy for solving elapsed time problems which is very visual and helpful for this new skill! Elapsed time can be challenging being that it is not a base10 system like most things in math and seconds/minutes/hours are regrouped every 60, not 100. It is very important that all 3rd grade student work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12 by the end of the year, having these facts mastered is critical for the work they will do in 4th grade. Using flash cards or multiplication games at home are a great way to work on these! Advanced: We took our first fraction unit assessment today and when we return from break we will begin our last unit! This will be a fractions operations unit and students will learn how to add, multiply, and subtract fractions with like denominators. Accelerated: We started to problem solve with elapsed time before break, and when we return from break will continue this. We will also problem solve with money and start a measurement project that will be taken as a major grade. Social Studies: We wrapped up the bulk of our Colonial America learning this week! When we return from spring break students will be creating a book (online on book creator) about one of the 13 colonies for a major grade.
