Tests will come home next Thursday with re-take dates if needed. Next week we will begin Unit 3 starting off with reading scientific texts and work on our nonfiction reading skills. Flocabulary Text Structure Questions to ask while your child reads at home: Unit 1 -"What does the character SAY? What does the character DO? How does the character FEEL?" -"What does all this tell us about their traits?". -Can you summarize your story using "somebody, wanted, but, so, then? -What do you think is the main idea/central idea (main thing the author wants us to learn from reading this text) -What details support that? Unit 2 -What do you think the author's opinion about this topic is? -What text structure does the author use to teach us this information? -Is the author comparing anything in the text? -Is the author describing something? What is the central idea? -Does the author teach us information in sequence, or in order? -Does the author describe a why something has happened? -How did the characters actions contribute to the events that happen in the story? -What do you think the lesson is of this story? Writing This week we finished typing our second realistic fiction story. I am so proud of students as they took on this new challenge to type a story. Students can practice their typing skills on learning.com (app on their Classlink) at home for optional practice throughout the year. Next week we will start an opinion writing unit. This opinion writing will be focused on writing an opinion using text evidence to support our opinions. Phonics Next week we will work on long vowel silent -e, simple multisyllable patterns. Math On Level: Next week we will review graphs and prepare for our Unit 2 test! Study guides came home today for next week's test. We will take our test across 2 days. Thursday students will take the test paper pencil. Friday, students will check over their work and enter their answers into the online testing platform that students are required to take their test on. Splitting it into two days will give students practice using their paper to show their work, practice taking their time to check their work, while also learning to take a test online for the first time. Unit 2 notes: The language we often use when teaching multiplication is "equal groups of", for example 3 x 2 = 6 is: 3 "equal groups of" 2=6. For division, we use "split into equal groups of", for example 6 "split into 2 equal groups" =3. You can preview these strategies in the unit resources. Now that we have finished up this unit, students should work towards memorizing their multiplication facts 0-12. Advanced: This week we finished up comparing and ordering fractions. Next week we will work on measuring to the nearest quarter inch and graphing this information on a line plot. We are starting to conclude our unit and plan to take our Unit 5 test on November 10th. Social Studies We will finish up our government test on Monday! Then we will start our next science unit: Rocks and Minerals! Student Success Skills This week we talked about resilience, and next week we will work on calm down strategies when we are upset.
