Using agendas is a great way to have conversations with your child about what they are learning and when they are taking assessments. You can partner with us as your child learns this new skill by initialing/signing your child's agenda on Monday nights after reviewing it with them. There is space at the bottom where students can log the title of the book(s) they are reading at home, and we would love to see that too! READING This week we started our new read aloud, Shiloh! In our whole group lessons we read fiction stories and continued to focus on identifying character traits, and answer and asking questions about the stories we read. We will continue this next week and will have a practice grade on Tuesday and a minor grade on Wednesday. Then we will end our week transitioning to some skills with informational reading. Accelerated- This week we worked on multi digit addition and next week we will focus on multi digit subtraction. We will plan to have a minor assessment on addition and subtraction next week by the end of the week. STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) This week we learned about strategies for improving focus. Next week we will take the SSS inventory. The Student Success Skills Inventory is used to measure student growth across Student Success Skill standards as a result of Rethink Ed lessons. Students will complete the 15-20 item inventory between August 28, 2023 – September15, 2023. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. There is space at the bottom where students can log the title of the book(s) they are reading at home, and we would love to see that too! READING This week we finished Reading Stone Fox and next week we will begin reading Shiloh. These texts allow us to have great conversations about characters; their traits, how they respond to problems, and how they change. We completed our iReady reading diagnostic and will be sharing those reports with you at our September conferences. In class we read Gary the Dreamer, an autobiography. We will continue narrative nonfiction next week and plan to take a practice grade on Gary the Dreamer on Tuesday. We will then transition into fiction text to continue our work of identifying important character traits and summarizing skills. PHONICS This week in phonics we reviewed long vowel silent-e, open syllables, hard and soft c/g. Next week we will review vowel teams. This first unit is a short unit that reviews second grade skills. A study guide will come home on Monday that students can work on throughout the week. Accelerated- This week we focused on place value and ended the week with some rounding. Next week we will start the week with our iReady diagnostic and continue working on rounding through the millions. We will also begin adding within the millions as well. This unit is very transitional, as we are just building directly off skills they have already mastered last year; the biggest difference from their first unit last year is that we are just increasing the numbers we are working with. If your child loves to be challenged in math and is expressing not feeling that right now, be assured that it will come! We will have a minor grade (quiz) on rounding next week on Thursday! STUDENT SUCESS SKILLS (social/emotional) This week we learned all about our brains and how they learn. Next week we will talk about strategies for improving focus. What an amazing first week of third grade! We have spent the week learning routines, procedures, expectations, and most importantly, more about one another! This is a really special group and we are excited for the year ahead. This is our blog that will be updated weekly, expect it to hit your inbox Friday afternoons.
First up will be important dates that will include school events, test dates, and anything that pertains to third graders! Then we will have a quick blurb about each subject area that will include a review of what we learned that week and a preview for what's coming next week. If you click the "Unit Resources" tab you can find overviews of each subject area if you want to see the "big picture". Making a habit of reading the blog each weekend is the best way to understand what your child is learning each week and can guide you in supporting your child at home. The third grade team looks forward to partnering with you to make third grade a positive year for your third grade child! PAWS stands for pride, attitude, wise choices, and safety. These PAWS expectations are school wide expectations to ensure a positive and safe learning environment for all students. Students are able to earn "PAWS points" that they can cash in each Friday to celebrate their hard work. AGENDAS Next week we will start to teach agenda routines to students. On Monday morning they will fill out their agenda for the entire week. They will write in their homework, assessment dates, and school events. Homework in third grade will consist of two parts: 1. nightly reading (10-15 minutes a night, any book they want) and 2. math review/practice (1-2 pages that students have the entire week to complete as your family's weeknight schedule allows). If they work on a few questions of their math homework each night combined with nightly reading, homework in third grade should never take more than 30 minutes a night. However, homework does not need to be turned in until Friday, so your family has the flexibility to pace it out in a way that fits into your weeknight activities best. There is space at the bottom where students can log the title of the book(s) they are reading at home, and we would love to see that too! READING This week we started our first read aloud: Stone Fox. Stone Fox is about a young boy, Little Willy, who enters a dog sled race with his loyal pup, Searchlight, in attempts to save his grandfather's potato farm that owes taxes. We are loving talking as a class about Little Willy's character traits which sets us up great for our learning in Unit 1 that will begin next week. We will start the unit reading a narrative nonfiction biography and fiction stories. Our focus skills will be identifying character traits, and summarizing events in stories. PHONICS We started phonics this week reviewing consonant blends, digraphs, silent letters, and complex consonants. Next week we will learn about long vowel silent-e, open syllables, hard and soft c/g. GRAMMAR Next week we will start our grammar instruction. Next week we will continue place value and comparing numbers through the thousands place. We will have 2 practice grades next week. Practice grades are only 15% on the semester average and are truly meant for students to practice skills and concepts before taking a higher weighted assessment. Accelerated- This week we started place value through the millions. Next week we will continue this work, focusing on comparing place values (example: in the number 267,576 the 7 in the thousands place is x100 greater than the 7 in the tens place) and comparing numbers. We will have one practice grade next week. Practice grades are only 15% on the semester average and are truly meant for students to practice skills and concepts before taking a higher weighted assessment.
