Writing: We are well underway in our opinion writing unit. This week we worked on our BIG and BOLD thesis statements. We are giving strong reasons and examples to support our thesis statements too. Next week will focus a lot on the structure of our opinion essays with introductions and making sure we are writing in paragraphs. Reading: Our mystery unit is off to a great start! We are using our detective skills to make predictions on suspects to solve the mystery before the crime solvers. We are working on more meaning jots in our readers notebook to enhance comprehension. Next week we will continue to use our detective skills to work on solving the case of The Absent Author. Math: Be sure to check out each math page for more details about current units. On-Level: On Level Math: We began learning all about division this week. Next week we will continue working on a variety of strategies with a quiz on Friday. Advanced: This week was about comparing fractions using greater than, less than, or equal to using models or number lines. Next week we will work on our last standard of the unit which is graphing. Our unit 5 assessment will be Friday, October 15th. Acc Math: This week we continued learning various strategies for solving multi digit multiplication. In 4th grade math students will be expected to solve 3 by 1 digit multiplication and 2 by 2-digit multiplication with more than one strategy. We will have a multiplication quiz on Tuesday. Grammar/Phonics: This week was all about the oi/oy sounds. OI goes in the middle of the word such as soil, noise, voice. OY goes at the end of the word such as boy, toy, destroy. Next week we will move back to grammar and work with pronouns. We will have a pronoun check in on Friday. Social Studies: We finished learning about the different regions of the Native Americans. We learned about the shelters, resources, food, clothing, climate, and the land/water. We participated in a region sort and took a shelter check too. Next week we will focus on comparing Native Americans from the past to present and the contributions they make to society today. We will also begin to work on our Native American end of unit project which will be completed in class.

Writing: Opinion writing began this week! This week we have been working on persuasive speeches. What can we find at our school to make better? Our writers are writing big, bold thesis statements and giving 3 reasons to support. We are also learning what will grab our audience's attention when trying to persuade them. Next week we will have a check in on our thesis statement and reasons. Reading: This week we focus on finding the central message of the story. We looked for clues to help understand what the author was trying to teach us. We read a variety of texts, used graphic organizers, and spent time in small groups working on central message. We took a check in on Friday. Next week we begin our Mystery Unit which is favorite of all 3rd grade. Be ready to read all the mystery books coming home! Math: Be sure to check out each math page for more details about current units. On-Level: On Level Math: We will continue multiplication strategies next week and will take a quiz on Tuesday September 28th. We will then begin learning strategies for division! Advanced: This week was about equivalent fractions. We have used models, fractions strips, number lines, and even words to show if fractions are equivalent. NF.3 is the most in-depth standard this unit and we will continue with it next week too. Comparing fractions using greater than, less than, and equal too. Acc Math: Next week we will continue learning various strategies for solving multi digit multiplication. In 4th grade math students will be expected to solve 3 by 1 digit multiplication and 2 by 2-digit multiplication with more than one strategy. Grammar/Phonics: We worked on Adverbs this week and took a check in on Friday. Next week we will shift back to phonics and work with the oy, oi sounds. Social Studies: This week we started learning about the different regions of the Native Americans. We learned about the Artic, Northwestern, Southwest, and Plains regions. We learned about the shelters, resources, food, clothing, climate, and the land/water. The students are working hard improving their note taking skills which will come in handy when we start our projects. Next week we will have a quiz on the shelters of each region. Writing: We have officially finished our 1st narrative writing unit. Next week we will begin our opinion unit. This unit is fun for the students as they come up with ways to make our school a better place. Reading: We finished up Stone Fox and most were shocked by the ending. We did not expect our beloved Searchlight to die in the race. This wrapped up our first reading unit. Our next unit is our Mystery unit which is always a 3rd grade favorite. Next week our focus will be identifying the central message of the story and have a check in on Friday. Math: Be sure to check out each math page for more details about current units. On-Level: We ended this week completing our first unit assessment in Illuminate. These unit tests are created and mandated by Fulton County. All 3rd grade on-level math students in Fulton county completed this assessment this week. Feedback will be coming home soon. Next week we start our multiplication and division unit. This is a big unit for 3rd grade as it is all new material and is not being built upon from earlier grades. We will learn a variety of strategies and games to solve multiplication problems this week. It is important to note that this first units focus is not to simply memorize multiplication facts, but rather lay a foundation to understanding what multiplication is. For example, not just memorizing that 2x3=6, but 2x3 represents 2 equal groups of 3. This understanding will be crucial as they advance to higher math skills over the years. Advanced: This week we worked hard on standard NF.2 which is all about fractions on a number line. Students became masters labeling fractions on a number line. Next week we begin to dive deep into equivalent fractions which is standard NF.3. This is the main standard of the unit and the most difficult. We will be spending 2 weeks just on this standard alone. Acc Math: This week we started Unit 2: The Relationship Between Multiplication and Division. We are continuing to learn multi-digit multiplication strategies, prime and composite numbers and will have a quiz on Tuesday. Grammar/Phonics: In phonics this week we learned all about igh. Next week we shift our focus back to grammar and will be working on adverbs. Science: We finished up our unit on the Regions of Georgia/Plants/Animals/Adaptations. We focused on standard NF.1 which is introducing fractions. What is a fraction? An equal part of a whole. We added the following math words to our vocab wall: fraction, numerator, denominator, unit fraction, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, and eighths. Next week we will begin NF.2 which is all about fractions on a number line. We will take a fractions on a number line quiz on Friday. Acc Math: This week we took our first unit test! Next week we will start Unit 2: The Relationship Between Multiplication and Division. Grammar: We worked on adjectives. Each day we spent time discussing and using adjectives in different activities and took a check in on Friday. Next we our focus is on phonics. Science: This week we worked hard on our researching skills. We took notes and created a poster about a region of Georgia using a checklist to include all of the important details.
