Happy third week of third grade! We are so proud of our third grade learners as they strive for their best each day.
Important Updates
Reading This week we continued practicing the important skill of identifying a characters feelings and traits. As we read various stories we asked ourselves "What does the character SAY? What does the character DO? How does the character FEEL?" and then, "What does all this tell us about their traits?". These are great questions to ask as a family at home when your child is reading a fiction story or non-fiction biography. We began to summarize text by using the strategy "somebody, wanted, but, so, then" which helps us hit all important parts of a summary! Who the story is about, what their motivation is, what problems they face and how they solve them. Next time your child finishes a book at home, ask them to summarize their story using "somebody, wanted, but, so". Next week we will finish up our character work for now and at the end of the week move into reading non-fiction expository texts. We will work to find the main ide and supporting details of a text. We will have a reading check in on characters traits and motivations on Friday. Writing Students have been working hard on their personal narrative stories! We learned the importance of adding dialogue in the story and bringing our story to life with details of what thinks looked and sounded like. Next week we will work to "publish" and turn in our story on Friday. Next up we will work on opinion writing! Phonics We are getting into some great routines with our phonics instruction. These lessons will continue to strengthen our knowledge on reading and writing words all words- even the most tricky ones that our language has to offer. :) Our phonics skill this week will be a large review of all vowel teams. Math On Level: This week we continued rounding focusing on rounding to the nearest 10. Students need to be able to round 2,3, and 4 digit numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 and we began to practicing rounding the same number to BOTH the nearest 10 and 100. (ex. 134 rounds to 100 and 130). Next week we will start 3 and 4 digit addition with regrouping. We will learn several strategies that will help students understand the "why" behind the standard algorithm that we (as adults) learned in school FIRST before using the standard algorithm. So if the way your child solves these probelms looks unfamiliar to you, we have some resources under our Unit Resources Tab! We will have a check-in on Friday. Advanced: This week we continued on with Unit 4: Geometry. We did a review of area and distributive property. They did learn these skills in Unit 3 in the spring, but these standards are assessed again in Unit 4 so I wanted to make sure they have a strong grasp on this skill. Next week we will introduce perimeter and plan to have a check in on Friday. Social Studies: This week we finished up our mini unit on Map Skills. Students learned about the 6 major US rivers and 2 major Mountain Ranges. We ended our week with a project where students created a large map in small groups. Next week we will start our first science unit: GA regions and habitats. This differs from their GA region unit last year in 2nd grade by focusing on the habitats in each region and the animals and plants that adapt to live in those habitats. Student Success Skills Each week will focus on one student success skill during morning meeting. This week we talked about what it means to be a good student. Next week we will take a pause on our skills and take an SSS inventory. The Student Success Skills Inventory is used to measure student growth across Student Success Skill standards as a result of ReThink Ed lessons. Students will complete the 15-20 item inventory between August 29, 2022–September 2, 2022. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. The inventory is pushed out to students using the Illuminate platform. Parents can choose to opt their student out of the inventory. To opt out, parents must submit a written request to opt out to the school principal
